Serkan Güreser, MD — Ophthalmic Surgeon
Two areas get most of my attention: SMILE Pro laser for people who want less dependence on glasses and contact lenses, and CAIRS for keratoconus. Cataract, glaucoma and other surgery follow the same rule: the right treatment for the right patient.
The two fields I work on most. Both start the same way: finding out whether your eye is a suitable candidate.
The newer generation of the SMILE procedure. No corneal flap is lifted: the laser shapes a thin disc of tissue inside the cornea, and that disc is removed through a small incision. Besides myopia and astigmatism, with the new-generation VisuMax 800 laser it can also be used for hyperopia.
It is not suitable for every eye. The decision follows corneal topography and thickness measurements; if SMILE Pro is not right for you, we discuss LASIK, PRK or ICL.
Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments: in keratoconus, ring segments prepared from donor corneal tissue are placed inside the cornea. The aim is to bring a steepened cornea closer to a more regular shape.
Stopping progression is a separate question, for which corneal cross-linking (CXL) is considered. Topography shows which step you are on.
If your child's prescription keeps rising: a guide for families on ways to slow myopia progression.

"Every eye is as individual as a signature; my job is to find the right path for it."
I graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1999 and began my ophthalmology residency at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital the same year. I have been seeing patients and operating in Ankara for more than 24 years.
I try to combine clinical practice with current scientific evidence, and to give each patient enough time to understand the process themselves. I am a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).
I write about the questions my patients ask most, with references, on separate sites.
Our study, "Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments (CAIRS) in Keratoconus: Interim Multi-Surgeon Outcomes", will be presented as an oral presentation at the KCXL International Experts' Meeting in Zurich, 26–28 November 2026. I will share the interim results of a joint series by four surgeons.
